Meeting called to order by Carole Blair at 8:34 AM

1. Distribution of ballots

2. 1996 minutes distributed and approved

3. Report from the Legislative Council

Financial state of the association is good; plans for an investment strategy have begun.

4. Report from Bill Eadie from the National Office

New Journal editors: Andrew King, Louisiana State Univ. is the new editor of QJS
Michael Beatty, Cleveland State University, is the new editor of CM
Jim Chesebro, Indiana State University, is the new editor of CSMC
Lawrence Hugenberg, Youngstown State University, is the new editor of SPEECH COMMUNICATION TEACHER.

1998 New York Convention: will be held in two hotels, the Marriot Marquis and the NY Hilton, the weekend before Thanksgiving.
1999--Chicago, the first weekend in November
2000--Seattle.

Publications: the new edition of the Matlon Index is available. The second edition of the CommSearch CD-ROM will be available in January, 1998. It will also be available for Macintosh.

Projects: NCA has been accepted into the American Council of Learned Societies.

National office: Legislative Council has voted to move the national office to downtown Washington, D.C.

5. Vice-Chair's report--Suzanne Daughton

Submissions were high in quality, if not numbers. 24 competitive papers and 17 programs were submitted to the PAD. 8 of the papers were debut papers. 20 panels were programmed for the convention.

Ron Lee announced a Conference on Public Address and Human Values at the Univ. Of Nebraska, April 23-25, 1998.

Marty Medhurst announced the theme of the presidential rhetoric conference at Texas A & M: Public Discourse in Cold War America, March 5-8, 1998.

Celeste Condit announced that she and Bonnie Dow are co-editors elect of WOMEN'S STUDIES IN COMMUNICATION and are accepting manuscripts.

10. New Business:

Carole Blair moves to thank Carolyn Calloway Thomas, Suzanne Daughton, and Bonnie Dow for service as officers.

Question of what to do with PAD funds:

Carole Blair--increase award amounts
John Murphy--grad student travel
Celeste Condit--dissertation research support award
Carole Jablonski--offset expenses for guest speakers at conferences
Jim Darsey--keep money flexible and set up a committee to consider requests each year.

Motion from Celeste Condit--use money for dissertation support. Seconded by Lester Olson. Amended by Kathleen Turner, who suggests it be called the Carroll Arnold Award. Motion carries.

Motion to design web page for PAD. Carries. Bonnie Dow and John Sloop will constitute a committee to look into this. Potential items for posting: grants available, links to speech text sources, conference calls, job postings.

Discussion of poster sessions: Do we want to schedule any? Consensus is NO.

Motion to thank Carole for her service from David Henry. Carries.
